i-Yush and Jerry Thomas’s album”Redemption” is the new age music designed by Artificial Intelligence which makes it a class apart.
We did an interview with the artist over a cup of coffee about this latest release, here’s what they had to say!
Tell us about your track
Midway through my album “Redemption”, this song conceptualizes talking to your own sub-conscious. Jerry is asking questions about his behaviour, choices and thoughts from the past and the present. It represents how self-talk starts putting things into perspective and helps us understand what thoughts serve us and what do not.
Tell us your inspiration behind this track
Jerry and I were planning a collaboration on a song from my album. I was experimenting with the granular synthesizer “Quanta” and I came up with this beat. My aim was to maximize the use of human vocals and use them as a technology to make music. This track is 90% made up from vocals. The initial atmospheric synth is made from synthesizing my own vocal sample. The drums are made from beatboxed vocals. ‘Voice as technology’ is my source of inspiration. Holly Herndon, who is an AI Music Producer/Composer who designed an AI baby named ‘Spawn’. She uses spawn to process any instruments or vocals she records. This turns any element to turn into Spawn’s voice. The Chainsmokers used ‘voice as technology’ intensively in their album “So Far So Good”. The tracks really inspired me to accommodate such experimental techniques into popular music,
How long did it take to record the track album EP ?
I started making this album in April 2022. Experimenting, producing, composing, tracking vocals, lyric writing, mixing and mastering. All of these processes were performed by me and it took me around 4 months to finish the album. It started with ‘Humnava’ and ‘Alaap’ leading onto ‘Talk to Me’ and ‘Me and You’. Slowly, it started to take shape. By the end of June, I had produced 6 of these tracks. Throughout July and August, I finished the rest.
What is the meaning behind the lyrics?
The lyrics portray the semblance of thoughts of the sub-conscious. Speaking to his mind, engaging in self-talk, Jerry tries to understand the relation between his state of mind and the decisions he has made throughout his life. Life in music is difficult and hence, it is stressful and could be heartbreaking.
What brings next after this release?
My entire album, “Redemption” is out now on all major streaming platforms. This is my debut album, so I am looking forward to what lies ahead of me. At the moment, I just want to understand myself even more. A more comprehensive album could be in the works a few months from now.
