Purbayan Chatterjee Releases ‘Satyagrah,’ First Single from ‘Sitar Stories’

Renowned sitar maestro Purbayan Chatterjee has once again demonstrated his mastery and innovation in Indian classical music with the release of his latest track, “Satyagrah.” This single, which is the first from his highly anticipated album Sitar Stories, offers a captivating tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and the principle of satyagraha – the pursuit of truth. The track blends traditional Indian classical music with modern sensibilities, encapsulating Purbayan’s signature style of innovation and reverence for tradition.

A Fusion of Sitar Sounds and Rhythmic Innovation

“Satyagrah” features a unique interplay between acoustic and electric sitars, showcasing both the timeless essence of the classical instrument and the modern appeal of its electric counterpart. The track is based on Raga JansamMohini and is layered with a dynamic drum and bass framework. This fusion brings out the versatility of the sitar, giving listeners an experience that is both rooted in the rich traditions of Indian classical music and reflective of global musical influences.

Accompanying Purbayan in this track are some of the finest musicians: Yogesh Samsi on tabla, Shravan Samsi on drums, and Steve Kottoor on keyboard. Their synergy is evident throughout the composition, with the tabla and drums providing a rhythmic backbone that complements the melodic flow of the sitar. The track was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Aditya Srinivasan, ensuring that every nuance of the music shines through.

Reflecting on the track, Purbayan Chatterjee explains, “Satyagrah is a celebration of truth. It is also a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, who instilled the value of truth with his movement. Music is a constant quest for truth, which is in our hearts. It is a process of self-realization, and if the artist is true to themselves, then they can communicate directly from their heart to the listener.”
