When Axl Rose’s favorite singer Dan McCafferty retired from Nazareth in 2013 after 45 years of lung-busting service, leaving bassist Pete Agnew because the final man standing from the band’s glory days, it appeared as if the sport may be up for Scotland’s rowdiest rock’n’rollers.
However not so. Loughborough-born Carl Sentance (previously of NWOBHM also-rans Persian Threat and in addition, briefly, Krokus) has crammed McCafferty’s boots with spectacular gusto.
Surviving The Legislation, the band’s second album with Sentance, is resolutely loud ’n’ proud in true Nazareth custom.
And whereas it falls a great distance in need of early classics similar to Hair Of The Canine, the spirit of the 70s lives on – within the ballsy swagger of Unusual Days and Runaway, in titles similar to Let The Whisky Move and Ciggies And Booze, and within the soulful album nearer You Made Me, which can absolutely convey a smile to Dan’s craggy previous face.
