We did an interview with the artist over a cup of coffee about this latest release, here’s what they had to say!

Tell us about your track

VKRM wrote the song ‘Where’d You Go’ as a tribute to his late grandparents as his way of coping with their passing. The song is about reflections and yearning in the midst of despair. He is fond of Soul and RnB music and wanted his song to have a similar sound. The song explores the conflict between reality and denial of the same, accentuated by a one-way phone call towards the end, that seems to transcend death. VKRM, is distraught and is pleading to the Universe to connect him to his grandparents. He realizes that he had taken them for granted like we all do in the case of our dear ones who love us unconditionally. He understands that people realize the true value of moments only when they become a memory that they cannot relive. Surja Dutta, Shailendra Wakhlu, Arpan Chatterjee and Maanavi Bisaria have added their wonderfully played parts to the song, making it a worthy tribute.

Tell us your inspiration behind this track

The song ‘Where’d You Go’ is inspired by love and the consequent loss of love. Human mortality is inevitable and as we age, our family members and loved ones get older and one fine day they cross the bridge. We get caught up in the web of our work and aspirations and end up taking our dear ones for granted. The song is an ode to his late grandparents and has been VKRM’s way of coping with grief. It is inspired by the 70’s and 80’s soul sound of greats like Al Green, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers.

How long did it take to record the track album EP ?

The song is arranged at VKRM’s home studio and has been added to by wonderful musicians living in different parts of the country. Surja and Arpan recorded their bass and drum parts respectively from Kolkata and Shailendra recorded his guitar lines from Delhi. Maanavi Bisaria from Bangalore recorded her vocal harmonies to compliment VKRM’s main vocals. It was then mixed and mastered by Surja Dutta and released on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, Amazon Music and other music platforms. Due to the demanding work schedules of the collaborators, the different takes took about a few weeks to get stitched together.

What is the meaning behind the lyrics?

The song ‘Where’d You Go’ is VKRM’s way of dealing with grief caused due to the passing of his grandparents. He is distraught and unable to accept reality as it is. We often say that it will get easier with time but it doesn’t. Perhaps the grief becomes more and more familiar….perhaps. The same was experienced by VKRM as he was writing the song. The song deals with loss, reflections and the realization of how transient we are, as are the ones whom we must hold close.

What brings next after this release?

VKRM is currently working on a funk track that has brass sections and groovy guitar and bass lines. He is a huge fan of funk music and wants to bring to the table something groovy and quirky to tap your feet to. The arrangement is currently underway.
